Create an Emotionally Healthy Organization
How do you find a balance between letting your emotions run wild and allowing them to build up? Emotional intelligence expert Harvey Deutschendorf’s article, “How to Handle Emotions at Work in a Healthy, Productive Way” outlines the best ways to create an emotionally balanced workplace.
- Show that emotions are okay. Leaders should demonstrate that showing some emotion is okay. They can do so by expressing their own feelings or using a few emotional words in their writing. Showing a little bit of emotion can build trust and bring you closer to your employees.
- Make it okay to step out. When people get too overwhelmed with anger or frustration, it may be best for them to remove themselves from the situation for a while until they get their emotions in check. Make sure your employees know that this is okay and be sensitive to those that need to step out when they feel overwhelmed.
- Encourage fun. Offices where people are having fun are emotionally healthy places. Having fun helps people to be more emotionally open and increases productivity.
